Today, instead of lamenting about how I don’t like winter, I am going to focus on what’s positive about it. I need to do this for my own sanity, otherwise I am going to do something really rash, like pack the dog, the cats, my husband and I into the car and just keep driving until we find somewhere warm….somewhere where I won’t see my breath with every exhale, where the only salt I see is on my Margarita, (not on the sidewalk) and where I can expose some of my winter-weary-white body to the fresh air! Oh how I long to shed the layers and layers of clothing that are necessary to survive winter in Canada!
Ok, back to reality. Here are some positive things about winter! Feel free to post comments on your favourite things.
- Wooly socks and comfy slippers. There is something very soothing about slipping my feet into a pair of warm wooly socks or slippers. After a summer of running around in open toed shoes, I think my feet and toes actually enjoy being snuggled up and swaddled. (and then by spring they are ready to be set free again, to wiggle and writhe unrestricted by socks!)
- Hot Tea. There is nothing more soothing to my winter-weary soul than a nice cup of hot tea, especially when shared with my husband or a good friend. The pleasant sensations of the steam rising up from the cup, bringing the aroma of orange-pekoe into my senses, followed by the warmth trickling down my throat, could never be matched by a glass of iced-tea in the hot months!
- Mulled Red Wine. I do love a glass of red wine just about anytime, but there is something extra special about a cup of Mulled Red Wine. To mull wine, you add a couple of spices (cinnamon and cloves), some brandy, (lots of brandy!), a bit of orange juice and two full unpeeled oranges, and let it all simmer for a while. This blends the flavours, and creates a soothing, warm drink that will leave you feeling toasty all the way down to your toes.
- The silence after a snow storm. We had a big snow storm yesterday, which actually started the night before. When I woke up yesterday, before my eyes even opened, I knew it had snowed the night before, because of the stillness and quietness that was all around. I live in downtown Toronto, where life goes on 24 hours a day, and there are rarely moments of real quiet. Early yesterday morning was one of those times when the city was quiet and still, because we had a fresh, thick blanket of snow. It provided great insulation from the noise!
- And my favourite part of winter? That it is followed by spring, then summer, then fall. That once it is over, it is over for a good long time.
Help me navigate these last few weeks of winter…what’s your favourite part? Please share, I need some help! LOL
